This is part of a series of paintings inspired by wishing trees.
I am fascinated by the rituals of trying fragments of fabric on to a designated tree.
Such trees are identified as possessing a special religious or spiritual value. 'Wishes' are left in hope of having a wish granted, or a prayer answered, from a nature spirit, saint or goddess, depending on the local tradition.
This painting is a personal attempt to convey a year in the life of a ‘wishing tree’ - a project I started and observed over the year 2019 and the hopeful/lessness of the act of leaving a 'wish'.
